Sabalenka defeats Pegula in straight sets to claim women’s US Open title
Sabalenka’s baseline forehand goes long to give Pegula the early lead. She then ties up the game 15-all with an authoritative forehand down the right side.
Pegula’s forehand ends up falling short as Sabalenka takes a 15-30 lead. Pegula ends up short again on her backhand as it is her turn to change racquets as she walks to her chair with Sabalenka on a double set point.
Sabalenka ends up going long on her backhand to make it 30-40, which delights the Pegula partisan crowd. Pegula then sends it to deuce after Sabalenka commits an unforced forehand error.
Pegula has a great opportunity to put away Sabalenka with a backhand winner down the right side as she approaches the net, but ends up hitting it into the net to give Sabalenka advantage.
Pegula is able to rescue the game back to deuce, but Sabalenka wrests back advantage with a deep baseline return down the left side. But the Belarusian is short on an attempted backhand winner down the right to send it back to deuce.
Pegula gets Sabalenka to mishit her backhand soon after to take advantage for the first time in this game. Sabalenka pushes Pegula back with several deep returns before employing a precise drop shot into the left service box, sending the game back to deuce.
Pegula ends up double-faulting to hand Sabalenka advantage. Sabalenka then takes the set after Pegula’s backhand drop shot finds the net once more.
