New Delhi: The fight is tough, the race is intense, and both the candidates for the US Presidential Elections 2024 and their respective teams are working around the clock.

Here we check crucial dates and events as it is a matter of about 10 days before the US elections and the American voters are set put the stamp of their approvals on the candidate of their choice between Democratic nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris and former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump.

The crucial dates in run up to US Presidential Elections leading to Inauguration Day

  • In-person voting commenced on September 20, 2024 and the Election Day is November 5, 2024.
  • As of October 22, 2024, more than 10 per cent of registered voters in the USA had already voted. According to the University of Florida’s Election Lab which tracks early polling and related issues, 17,768,575 voters had had their ballot.
  • US presidential debate: Donald Trump and Kamala Harris faced each other on for the first time on September 10, 2024 for the presidential debate.
  • US Vice Presidential debate: Minnesota’s Democrat Governor Tim Walz and Republican Senator from Ohio, JD Vance had a face-off on October 1, 2024.
  • Voting Day: Voters across the United States will cast their ballots to elect the next “president of the United States” (POTUS) on November 5, 2024.
  • Postal Votes:  The last day for 17 states and District of Columbia to allow postal votes to arrive with Election Day postmark is November 25, 2024.
  • Donald Trump sentencing: Trump is scheduled to be sentenced in the New York hush money trial on November 26.
  • Georgia runoff election: Georgia runoff election will be held on December 3, 2024 if no candidate in a race receives a majority of the vote on Election Day.
  • Louisiana runoff election: Louisiana runoff election will be held on December 7. Louisiana doesn’t have partisan primaries. Instead, all candidates run on the same November 5 ballot. A candidate who receives more than 50% of the vote wins the election. If no one does, the top two candidates will advance to this runoff.
  • Official voting for president and vice president: Electors in each state officially cast their votes for president and vice president on December 11, 2024.
  • Deadline for 538 electoral college votes to arrive in Washington is December 17, 2024. Also, the electors meet in their respective state capitals and the District of Columbia to formally vote for president and vice president.
  • Formal counting in electoral votes: Electoral votes will formally be counted before a joint session of Congress and the president of the Senate will formally announce the electoral result on January 6, 2025.
  • Inauguration Day: The 2025 United States presidential inauguration will take place on Monday, January 20, 2025 in Washington, DC. The winner of the 2024 United States presidential election is expected to take the oath of office as the 47th president of the United States of America on that day, and the winner’s running mate is expected to take the oath of office as the 50th vice president and officially take office.
