US election 2024 Live Updates: Harris campaigns in Michigan, Trump targets Eastern battleground states

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is set to campaign in Michigan on Sunday, while her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, will visit three crucial eastern battleground states in the final days leading up to an election that may hinge on a narrow segment of voters. Current opinion polls indicate a historically tight race, and both campaigns express uncertainty about which candidate will emerge victorious in the seven pivotal states that could decide the outcome on Tuesday.

A recent poll indicated Harris leading in Iowa—a state Trump won convincingly in the last two elections—suggesting the potential for an unexpected result, although another survey showed her trailing there. Harris will be campaigning in East Lansing, Michigan, a college town that is critical for her party’s success in the industrial state.

She faces some scepticism from the 200,000 Arab Americans in Michigan, many of whom feel that the vice president has not done enough to advocate for an end to the war in Gaza and to reconsider aid to Israel. In contrast, Trump visited Dearborn, a central hub for the Arab American community, on Friday, where he promised to conclude the conflicts in the Middle East.

Trump plans to hold rallies in three smaller cities, aiming to rally rural voters who constitute a vital part of his support base. His day begins in Lititz, Pennsylvania, followed by an afternoon stop in Kinston, North Carolina, and concludes with an evening rally in Macon, Georgia.

This will mark the first day since last Tuesday that the two candidates are not in the same state. On Saturday, their planes were in close proximity at Charlotte, North Carolina, where both held separate rallies.

Later, Harris travelled to New York for an unexpected appearance on “Saturday Night Live.”

In these final campaign days, Harris is focused on persuading voters that she can alleviate the rising cost of living—a major concern after years of inflation. She has also characterised Trump as a dangerous and unpredictable figure, urging voters to move away from his divisive style of politics.
