Richard Gere Is Leaving the U.S. for the Most Surprising Reason

The rom-com vet has his sights set on a very romantic city.

The world has fallen in love with Richard Gere on screen time and time again. He captured fans’ hearts as a foxy, wealthy businessman in Pretty Woman; an ambitious journalist in Runaway Bride; and a heartthrob lawyer with a passion for ballroom dancing in Shall We Dance? It turns out (to no surprise) that he is just as swoon-worthy in real life. Like a real-life rom-com, Gere just sold his Connecticut home for the most charming reason.

Per the New Canaan Advertiser, the Chicago star sold his New Canaan house, which he purchased in 2022, for $10.8 million to prep for a move abroad. He sold the property, which previously belonged to Paul Simon and Edie Brickell, for $50,000 less than he paid for it.

He lived in the home with his wife, Alejandra Silva, and reportedly wanted to turn the property into a farm at one point. The house includes six bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a pool, several gardens, and a three-bedroom guest cottage. It spans 32 acres.

The move comes six months after Gere expressed a desire to move abroad. The actor shared in an April 2024 interview with Vanity Fair Spain that he wished to move to his wife’s native country, Spain, so she could be closer to her relatives. The couple have lived in the U.S. since they married in 2018.

“For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture,” he told the publication. “She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers.”

He continued, saying, “I love Spain and the ability of the Spanish people to live transmitting joy and happiness,” adding that the international move will be a “great adventure because I have never lived full-time outside the United States.”

The couple will relocate with their two children, Alexander, 5, and James, 4. Gere also shares a 24-year-old son, Homer, with his ex-wife, Carey Lowell, while Silva shares an 11-year-old son, Albert, with her ex-husband, Govind Friedland.

The 75-year-old shared at the time that he has a house in the New York countryside, so he will still have a place to stay in the States.
