Timberwolves end 19-year drought for stellar accomplishment against Clippers | Sporting News
While consistency hasn’t been a strength for the Minnesota Timberwolves this season, the past few games have been much more appealing. Ever since Anthony Edwards called the team out for being soft, it seems like the team is beginning to work through their chemistry issues.
With so many games left to be played, the Wolves have plenty of time to get it together and get back in the playoff discussion. On paper, they’ve got one of the best rosters in the league. If they don’t score a bunch of points, Minnesota should have one of the best defenses in the league.
“We know who we are. We know what team we can be and we know our identity. When we do that, good things happen,” center Rudy Gobert told FanDuel Sports after Wednesday night’s game.
The Wolves have held the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers to under 100 points in two of their three recent matchups. All three games have resulted in wins for Minnesota. For the first time in 19 years, the Wolves held an opponent to 80 or fewer points in back-to-back games.
After this stretch, the Wolves now have the best defense over the last two weeks. They’re allowing just 84 points per game over the past three games. The New York Knicks’ defense is the second-best in the past three games (96.3).
Of course, Minnesota would like to put it together for a longer stretch since three games is such a small sample size. It is a step in the right direction if this team is going to turn things around.
Coach Chris Finch addressed the team’s improved play over the past few games.
“This is two games in a row where we’ve played our most complete basketball on both sides of the ball. This is what we’ve got to do. We haven’t been doing that and we’re starting to figure it out and find a rhythm and understand how important defense is to us.”
