Phillies Rob Thomson shuts down trade rumors surrounding All-Star | Sporting News
The Philadelphia Phillies have been rumored to be shopping one of their All-Star players. However, manager Rob Thomson shut down all speculation at the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings.
During an appearance on MLB Network, Thomson made it clear that the Phillies are not shopping 2024 All-Star Alec Bohm, but teams are approaching them.
“He’s really improved so much, and I know the rumors are flying all over the place. We’re not shopping him,” Thomson said of Bohm. “But people are approaching us on him so you got to listen. This guy has improved so much, not just physically, but mentally, over the course of the three or four years he’s been in the big leagues.”
Bohm was named an All-Star for the first time in his career last season. He hit 15 home runs and had a .280 batting average for the Phillies. While he was a big part of the Phillies offense, Thomson praised his defensive improvement.
Bohm is an attractive option for teams looking for a third baseman. He has club control and is coming off of his best season. He would not be a free agent until 2027 which is why the Phillies are at least forced to listen to offers. Even teams capped by payroll concerns could justify trading for Bohm since he has three seasons before becoming a free agent.
Nonetheless, Thomson seems to make his stance, and the Phillies’ stance, clear. They are not looking to trade Bohm despite all the rumors. However, that does not mean that they would not accept an offer that blows them away, but judging by Thomson’s comments it may take a significant package to get Bohm out of Philadelphia.
