Online Gambling: A Silent Epidemic Destroying Young Lives
The future of our youth appears bleak if the issue is left unchecked
In recent years, Kashmir has been witnessing a disturbing trend of online gambling and betting. This addiction is spreading like wildfire, involving young minds and wreaking havoc on individuals, families, and society at large.
The growing threat:
The ease of access to gambling platforms via smartphones and the internet has made this menace accessible to almost everyone, including teenagers and professionals. The lure of quick money and the thrill of betting have led many down a dangerous path. Tragically, this has resulted in not just financial ruin but also a cascade of social and psychological issues.
Financial implications:
Online gambling is bleeding families dry. For instance, a 12th-grade student, Sagar (name changed), has lost Rs 3 lakhs of his parents’ hard-earned money. His family, already struggling financially, had dreams of building a modest house, but those aspirations now lie shattered. Sagar has had to abandon his studies to work alongside his father.
A young doctor, Dr. Raj Khan (name changed), has also fallen victim to this addiction, losing several lakhs. His inability to focus on his profession is a grave concern, as it directly impacts his patients and his career.
In another heart-wrenching example, a nurse and a teacher from North Kashmir have collectively lost a substantial amount of money, jeopardizing their financial stability and professional integrity.
The addiction to gambling often leads to depression, anxiety, and a loss of self-esteem. Young individuals, unable to cope with their financial losses, are at risk of developing severe mental health issues. This, in turn, strains familial relationships, sometimes to a breaking point.
As desperation sets in, some individuals resort to theft, fraud, or other criminal activities to fund their addiction. This not only tarnishes the reputation of the community but also contributes to a rise in violence and societal discord.
The role of society and parental vigilance in combating the menace:
The gravity of this issue calls for collective action. Authorities, educational institutions, religious organizations, and parents must come together to address this growing menace.
Parents must monitor their children’s online activities and educate them about the risks of gambling. Open communication can help in identifying early signs of addiction. Similarly, schools, colleges, and coaching centers must launch awareness campaigns to educate students about the financial and psychological pitfalls of gambling. Counselors should be appointed to provide guidance and support to those who are already affected. Masjids, community centers, and religious institutions have a vital role to play. Sermons and discussions can focus on the moral and social consequences of gambling.
A bleak future if left unchecked:
If this issue is not addressed urgently, the future of Kashmiri youth appears grim. Known for their resilience, intelligence, and talent, many young individuals are at risk of squandering their potential due to this addiction.
Authorities must take immediate steps to regulate online gambling platforms. Stringent laws and penalties for illegal gambling activities can act as a deterrent. At the same time, helplines and rehabilitation centers should be established to help those battling addiction. The rise of online gambling in Kashmir is not just an individual problem; it is a societal issue that demands immediate attention. Through collective effort, awareness, and stringent action, we can curb this menace and secure a brighter future for our youth. The time to act is now.
