President Biden signs bill to officially declare bald eagle national bird of United States – World News
The bald eagle, a majestic symbol of American power and resilience for over two centuries, has now officially become the national bird of the United States. President Joe Biden signed the legislation into law on Tuesday, correcting an oversight in the nation’s legal framework.
While the bald eagle has graced the Great Seal of the United States since its design was finalised in 1782, it had never been legally designated as the national bird. Congress that same year named it the national emblem and its iconic image has since appeared on countless official documents, military insignias, US currency and the presidential flag.
Known for its striking white head, yellow beak and brown body, the bald eagle is indigenous to North America and embodies the nation’s strength and freedom. The bird is also an integral part of the Great Seal, which features the eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, symbolising peace and readiness for defense.
By officially recognizing the bald eagle as the national bird, the legislation cements its status as a cornerstone of American identity. As President Biden remarked, “This enduring symbol of our nation now takes its rightful place in our history and our hearts.”
