AGA Report: Michigan’s Top Online Casino Market in 2023
The Wolverine State has become the online casino capital of the US.
The American Gaming Association has released a report showing that Michigan had the largest online casino market in 2023. The state saw $1.92 billion wagered at online casinos during the year, beating out Net Jersey by just over $100,000.
Michigan’s success in 2023 helped fuel growth for the iGaming industry across the US. The six legal US markets were up a combined 44.5% compared to 2022. That growth is impressive given that the industry hasn’t expanded past the six markets where they are currently legal: Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, and West Virginia.
BetMGM and the MGM Grand Detroit led the way in Michigan, with $1.85 billion in revenue in 2021. FanDuel and Motor City Casino are close behind with $1.10 billion, followed by DraftKings and Bay Mills at $984 million.
There are a total of 16 online casinos currently live in Michigan.
Michigan Finished Fifth in Overall Gambling Revenue
While Michigan led the way with online gaming, they finished fifth in overall revenue. That includes revenue from both retail and online casinos. Here is how the top five markets finished in 2023:
-
Nevada – $15.5 Billion
-
New Jersey – $5.8 Billion
-
Pennsylvania – $5.8 Billion
-
New York – $4.7 Billion
-
Michigan – $3.6 Billion
Nevada’s long-established retail market remains the largest market in the country, but Michigan is quickly closing the gap on the other three markets.
Michigan Retail Casino Revenue Continues to Decline
The success of Michigan’s online casino industry has slowly been taking a toll on its retail locations. Brick-and-mortar casinos saw a 2.7% drop in revenue compared to 2022 as more residents opted to do their gaming from home.
Despite the drop, Detroit still ranked eighth in the country in retail gambling revenue.
