Alabama travel expert thinks online passport renewal is a ‘great thing’

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – People planning to travel internationally this summer now have an easier way to renew their United States passport.

The public can complete the renewal process online, something an Alabama travel expert believes will make the process more effortless.

The State Department is doing a trial run that allows you to apply for updated travel documents from a computer.

Right now, it’s limited to a certain number of people daily. Windows will open at midday Eastern time each day, and then close once the system has reached its daily limit. This is to monitor how well the system works.

Clay Ingram, a spokesperson for AAA Alabama, is optimistic if it works.

“They’re really, really funny and picky about the photographs,” Ingram said. “It’s going to be tough to get to that point I think, but once they do, it’s going to be a great thing. It will make everything a lot easier, and a lot faster as well.”

To apply online, there are some requirements.

Individuals must be at least 25-years-old, their passport should have been issued between 2009 and 2015, and they should not be changing any personal information.

People can find other requirements, and a link to renew, here.
