AT&T joins Telecom Infra Project’s Board of Directors – ET Telecom
NEW DELHI: The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) Wednesday said that AT&T has joined its Board of Directors. The industry body has appointed Rob Soni, Vice President–Radio Access Network (RAN) Technology, AT&T, as the company’s representative.
“AT&T has been a trailblazer of open and disaggregated technologies. Rob’s appointment to TIP’s Board of Directors further reflects the global profile of our community, and we look forward to deepening our collaboration with the company and benefiting from Rob’s extensive experience,” said Yago Tenorio, Chairman of TIP and Fellow and Network Architecture Director at Vodafone Group.
“I’m delighted to have joined TIP’s Board of Directors and to meaningfully contribute towards driving the commercialization of open and disaggregated technologies across the globe. This appointment supports AT&T’s effort to deploy 70% of our wireless network traffic across open-capable platforms by late 2026 and aligns perfectly with our commitment to efficiency and innovation,” said Rob Soni, Vice President–RAN Technology, AT&T.
Under a five-year deal, AT&T is working with Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson and other vendors to deploy an Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) in the United States. The US telco’s spending could reach $14 billion during this duration.
AT&T’s Open RAN plan is for 70% of its wireless network traffic to flow across open-capable platforms by late 2026. The company expects to have fully integrated open RAN sites operating in coordination with Ericsson and Fujitsu, starting in 2024.
Starting 2025, AT&T will scale Open RAN throughout its wireless network in coordination with multiple suppliers such as Corning Incorporated, Dell Technologies, Ericsson, Fujitsu, and Intel.
