Bill Belichick has interesting demand before accepting North Carolina job | Sporting News
After spending the 2024 NFL season working in media, former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is looking to get back into coaching in 2025.
While it would’ve been perfectly reasonable to assume that Belichick would only be looking for a head coaching position in the NFL, it appears that’s not the case.
Belichick reportedly interviewed to become the next head coach at the University of North Carolina after the Tar Heels recently fired back Mack Brown. And, while it still seems farfetched that Belichick would consider coaching in the college game for the first time at 72 years old, it may be his best chance of being a head coach in 2025.
Interestingly, The Guardian’s Ollie Connolly reported that Belichick has a condition to be hired as the team’s next head coach.
“Per sources, I’m told Bill Belichick’s negotiations with North Carolina include a guarantee that Stephen Belichick will be named the school’s head coach in waiting,” Connolly posted on social media. “UNC is open to that guarantee. Discussions are not a bid to gain leverage for NFL offers, and BB is open to the move.”
Connolly also reports that the younger Belichick, who currently serves as the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington, has already been approached for head coaching positions.
While this would obviously be something that the elder Belichick wants, it could actually make the move more interesting for North Carolina. With Belichick’s age, he’s not a long-term plan but having a successor on staff means they wouldn’t have to restart everything again when Belichick inevitably retires.
