Cardinals $260 million former All-Star drawing interest from Yankees | Sporting News
The St. Louis Cardinals plan to cut payroll this offseason. While the chances of a Ryan Helsley trade seem to be dwindling, that is not the case for former MVP candidate Nolan Arenado.
John Mozeliak has made it clear that he intends to trade the eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glover. Where Arenado will end up is uncertain, but it appears that his days in a Cardinals uniform are numbered.
Katie Woo of The Athletic reported that the Cardinals may have a team they can make a deal with involving Arenado. According to Woo, that team is the New York Yankees.
“At least one team involved in the Soto bidding, the New York Yankees, has expressed interest in Arenado, according to a league source, though it is unclear at this time if the Yankees are one of Arenado’s approved teams,” Woo wrote on Monday.
The Cardinals likely won’t get a major haul in exchange for Arenado, but that doesn’t mean they’ll get a bad package in return. If they deal with the Yankees, the return package likely won’t feature top prospect Jasson Dominguez.
For the Yankees, this would allow them to shift Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base. As for St. Louis, third base would be opened up for Brendan Donovan, Nolan Gorman, or Thomas Saggese. Gorman seems to be the favorite to claim the job.
Arenado had a down year for the Cardinals in 2024, slashing .272/.325/.394 with only 16 home runs, 71 RBI and an underwhelming .719 OPS.
The Cardinals seem committed to making a deal happen, and it may happen sooner rather than later.
