With Christmas just around the corner, heavy snowfall is predicted across several US states. According to the latest forecast, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin can experience heavy snow through the holiday season.

Northeast and Midwest

Heavy snowfall is predicted in the Northeast and the Midwest. Cities from New York to Boston face the threat of frozen precipitation this week, one of the busiest travel periods of the year. These areas could dip as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-6 degrees Celsius) to 10 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 degrees Celsius). The heaviest snow accumulation is likely to occur from Friday into Saturday.

A fast-moving winter storm has hit parts of the Midwest, bringing snow, ice, and freezing winds. There were reports of interrupted traffic, most notably in the Twin Cities region (Minneapolis–Saint Paul). Major interstate highways in North Dakota were also shut down as temperatures here may fall -20 degrees Fahrenheit (-29 degrees Celsius) to -30 degrees Fahrenheit (-34 degrees Celsius). The National Weather Service (NWS) has now put out winter storm warnings across portions of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas since there are unsafe road conditions.

TSA Forecast

According to the forecast released by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), about 120 million Americans plan to travel during the holiday period. Delays and cancellations may affect airports in the affected regions, like Boston Logan International and Minneapolis-St. Paul International. Risky road travel may occur, mainly on interstate highways like I-95 in the Northeast and I-90 in the Midwest.

Travelers are advised by the American Automobile Association (AAA) to closely follow the weather forecasts and pack emergency kits for road travel. Most airlines have also announced waiving all change fees for travel originating from or to-impact areas.
