Delhi records season’s coldest day, temperature to drop further: Travel tips
New Delhi woke up to the season’s coldest morning today, with the minimum temperature plunging to 4.9°C at Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station. As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Palam recorded a slightly higher minimum of 6.2°C. A thin layer of fog blanketed the city, maintaining the morning chill until around 9 AM.
The sharp temperature drop was caused by surface winds blowing from the northwest at 8–10 km/h, according to the IMD, which also reported smog and mist conditions over Delhi. As the area prepares for a cold wave that is likely to linger until mid-December, these conditions are anticipated to get worse.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 209, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Specific areas recorded even worse levels. For context, AQI readings between 201-300 indicate ‘poor’ air quality, which can cause health issues, especially for sensitive groups.
Cold wave and regional forecast
The IMD has predicted a severe cold wave across northern India starting December 9. Delhi is likely to see temperatures plummet further, with the minimum expected to dip further. Neighbouring states, including Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh, are also set to experience similar conditions.
The cold wave is expected to last until December 14 in parts of Rajasthan and extend to Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and western Uttar Pradesh from December 11.
Amid the harsh weather, the Delhi Government has set up night shelters at various locations, including AIIMS, Lodhi Road, and Nizamuddin Flyover. These shelters offer refuge to those in need during the biting cold.
Residents are advised to take precautions against the cold and limit outdoor activities during peak pollution hours.
