Duke lands top-rated QB transfer to replace Maalik Murphy | Sporting News
Though there should be no surprises when it comes to the transfer portal and college football, it did come as a bit of a shock when Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy entered earlier this week. However, it looks like Manny Diaz has once again found his quarterback for next season.
Darian Mensah, a redshirt freshman and the top-rated quarterback in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings, has committed to Duke. Mensah, who led Tulane to the AAC title game in his first season as a starter, will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Mensah’s decision marks a significant addition for the Blue Devils, who are reeling from the loss of Murphy after a successful 9-3 season. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Mensah shut down his recruitment after visiting Duke on Tuesday, solidifying his commitment to head coach Manny Diaz’s program.

The former Tulane quarterback made waves (no pun intended) in the 2023 season, throwing for 2,723 yards and 22 touchdowns with a completion percentage of 65.9%. Mensah’s efficiency and accuracy not only led the AAC but also showcased his potential as one of the most promising young quarterbacks in the nation. His breakout year included an eight-game win streak before Tulane fell to Memphis in early November and later to Army in the AAC title game.
During his recent visit to Durham, Mensah was impressed by Duke’s facilities, coaching staff, and camaraderie among the players.
“It’s just a family out here,” Mensah said. “I wanted to be part of that.” He also highlighted Duke’s academic reputation as a deciding factor, noting the allure of a prestigious degree.
Mensah praised head coach Manny Diaz, saying, “He gets you going; he’s legit. They have a legit defensive line. He’ll take this team as far as we want to go.”
Despite his decision to transfer, Mensah will not be eligible to play in Duke’s Gator Bowl matchup against Ole Miss. However, his addition provides a spark of optimism for the Blue Devils as they prepare for the 2025 season. With Mensah behind center, Duke has solidified its quarterback position and continues to build on Diaz’s Year 1 success as head coach.
The Blue Devils, now armed with one of the most coveted players in the transfer portal, are poised to remain competitive in the ACC and perhaps further.
