Indian nationals living illegally in the US sent back on a special flight; how it’s going to affect travellers

The US has recently arranged for a special chartered flight to send Indian nationals who were living in the country illegally. The news was shared by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The action was carried out in coordination with the Indian government, underscores the US’s action on immigration act. The chartered flight departed for India on October 22 and carried Indians who did not have any legal reason to stay in the country.

A senior DHS official, Kristie A. Canegallo said that Indian nationals without proper papers are subject to immediate removal. She also talked about potential migrants against believing false promises from smugglers who suggest that illegal pathways can lead to a secure stay in the United States. Instead, the DHS encourages the use of lawful and regulated means of migration.

The DHS has observed a significant reduction in border encounters since June 2024, when the “Securing the Border” Presidential Proclamation and a corresponding Interim Final Rule took effect. The measures have contributed to a 55 percent drop in encounters at the southwest border, demonstrating the impact of stricter immigration policies.
