Josefine Lindström, Co-founder of Casinotopplistan: “2024 has been a year of balance in the gambling sector”
A few days ago, I had the pleasure of speaking with Josefine Lindström, a key figure in the online gambling industry. As one of the co-founders and leading writers for CasinoTopplistan, a Swedish reference outlet in this field, Josefine has closely followed every transformation in the sector.
Our conversation took place in a relaxed atmosphere via video call from her office in Stockholm. Josefine is warm, passionate about her work, and deeply knowledgeable about the challenges and opportunities in this industry. We took the opportunity to look back at 2024, a year full of significant changes, and to discuss what lies ahead in 2025. I was especially impressed by how she connects her professional experience with her personal vision of gambling as a responsible and exciting form of entertainment.
Q: Josefine, how did your journey in the gambling world begin? Was it planned or just a coincidence?
A: (Laughs) Totally a coincidence. I never imagined I’d end up in this industry. I started as a freelance writer for a Swedish operator, and I was fascinated by the complexity behind something that, from the outside, seems so simple. It’s not just about numbers or games; there’s a lot of psychology, strategy, and of course, the responsibility of offering something entertaining without causing harm. I was completely hooked.
Q: Over the course of your career, was there a moment that marked a turning point for you?
A: Definitely. It was when we launched an initiative at CasinoTopplistan to educate players about responsible gambling. We received messages from people thanking us for the resources we provided and how it helped them make more conscious decisions. That kind of feedback gives you perspective and meaning in your work.
Q: From your perspective, how has this year been for the online gambling industry?
A: It’s been an interesting and challenging year. On one hand, technology continues to advance rapidly, and online casinos have become more intuitive and appealing. On the other hand, regulations have tightened, especially in Europe, which is a good thing but has forced operators to adapt quickly. I’d say 2024 has been a year of balance—between innovation and regulatory compliance, between entertainment and responsibility.
Q: What impact do you think these changes have had on players?
A: For many, it’s been a positive change. Stricter regulations have brought transparency and protection, while technological improvements have made the experience more personalized and secure. Players today feel more empowered, with more tools to play responsibly.
Q: Gambling often carries a bad reputation. How can the industry change that perception?
A: It’s a challenge, but not impossible. It all starts with education—helping players understand how games work, what the risks are, and what tools they have to stay in control. I also think operators need to be more proactive in demonstrating their commitment to responsible gambling. It’s not just a marketing effort; it needs to be genuinely reflected in every decision they make.
Q: Do you feel operators are doing enough in this regard?
A: Some are, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. There are still companies that prioritize short-term profits over long-term sustainability. However, I believe change is underway, and players are also starting to demand more accountability from operators.
Q: What trend or innovation do you think will make the biggest difference in 2025?
A: Virtual reality is incredibly promising. Imagine being able to step into a virtual casino and have an immersive experience from home. But I’m also excited to see how artificial intelligence can make gambling safer by detecting risky patterns before they become a problem.
Q: If you had to bet on one technology that will transform the industry, which would it be?
A: I’d bet on artificial intelligence. Its ability to personalize the player experience while simultaneously reinforcing responsible gambling makes it an incredibly powerful tool.
Q: Sweden is a reference in this industry. What do you think makes the Swedish approach special?
A: I think it’s our obsession with transparency and innovation. Here, it’s not just about offering entertainment but also building trust with players. That, combined with a culture that values social responsibility, makes Sweden stand out.
Q: How has your culture influenced the way you work in this sector?
A: Sweden has a very practical mindset and a collective well-being approach. I always think about how a decision can impact both the operator and the player. That perspective has helped me make more balanced decisions.
Q: When you’re not immersed in the gambling world, how do you disconnect?
A: I love spending time in nature, especially in the Swedish forests. I’m also a big fan of mystery novels; they help me clear my mind.
Q: Is there anything this industry has taught you that you apply in your personal life?
A: Yes, the importance of setting boundaries. Learning to establish them is fundamental, both in gambling and in daily life. It’s what allows you to enjoy without losing control.
Q: What advice would you give to someone wanting to enter this industry?
A: Be curious and eager to learn. This industry changes constantly, and those willing to adapt and think creatively have a lot to gain.
Q: And for players?
A: Remember that gambling is entertainment, not a solution. Play responsibly, enjoy yourself, but always stay within your limits.
