Microsoft’s Xbox to sell games directly through Android app, taking advantage of US ruling against Google – Times of India
Microsoft announced plans to sell and play Xbox games directly through its Android app starting in November, taking advantage of a recent US court ruling against Google. Xbox President Sarah Bond revealed the news on social media, stating that the change “will allow more choice and flexibility” for Android users in the United States.
The move follows a federal judge’s order requiring Google to open its app store to competition, starting November 1.The ruling found Google’s Android app store to be an illegal monopoly and mandated that the company allow third-party app stores and alternative payment systems on Android devices for three years.
Microsoft’s update to the Xbox Android app will enable users to purchase Xbox games and play them immediately through Xbox Cloud Gaming. This integration streamlines the mobile gaming experience for Xbox users, consolidating features previously spread across multiple apps.
The announcement comes as Microsoft has been working on a broader strategy to expand its gaming presence on mobile platforms. The company had previously mentioned plans for a browser-based Xbox mobile store, initially slated for a July launch, which would focus on first-party mobile games from Microsoft’s studios.
Google has announced its intention to appeal the court’s decision. However, Microsoft’s quick response suggests the company was prepared for this opportunity to expand its mobile gaming footprint. It remains to be seen how other game publishers and app developers will respond to the changing mobile ecosystem.
