Olympics 2024 live day one updates

Currently, motorsports isn’t represented at the Olympics, though there is a similar biennial competition called the FIA Motorsport Games. As F1 settled into its Belgian Grand Prix weekend at the same time as the Olympics warmed up in Paris, it begged the question: Would the F1 paddock like to see motorsports included, perhaps at a karting level?

Oscar Piastri said in Hungary:

💬 “I think with motorsport being so unique in terms of the car and the equipment and the team around you providing such a critical element, it’s very, very difficult to even that out 100 percent on any playing field.

“I think a good thing about our sport is, yes, of course, we take a lot of pride in representing our countries. But we take a lot of pride in that, in most cases, the best of the best, regardless of your nationality or your background, can make it to the top. I think it’s a cool idea in theory, but I don’t know how you’d do it in practice.”

Motorsports don’t quite fit in the Olympics-type format. Pierre Gasly suggested perhaps doing a one-off race. The next day, during the Friday press conference in Hungary, several teams’ technical personnel weighed in on the idea. Mercedes’ Andrew Shovlin and Sauber’s Xevi Pujolar said they’d watch, while Red Bull’s Pierre Waché pointed out that “it would not be the car issue then!”

Aston Martin’s Dan Fallows added:

“Absolutely great idea. I mean, if you’ve ever been karting with a Formula One driver, they’re like a different level. And to watch them going around a karting circuit, I think, would be fantastic. So if we have an Olympic karting event with Formula One drivers in it, yeah, I’d watch that, definitely.”
