Red Sox, Diamondbacks trade proposal ships multiple All-Stars to Boston | Sporting News

The Arizona Diamondbacks missed the postseason in 2024 after making it to the World Series in 2023. They could move on from some star players to better prepare for the future.

FanSided’s Jacob Mountz proposed this trade that ships two Diamondbacks All-Stars to the Boston Red Sox:

  • Diamondbacks receive: right fielder Wilyer Abreu, shortstop Marcelo Mayer and catcher Kyle Teel
  • Red Sox receive: second baseman Ketel Marte and right-handed pitcher Zac Gallen

Gallen and Marte are two big pieces for the Diamondbacks. However, both could garner big returns in a trade. Gallen, 29, had a 3.77 ERA in 2024 and was an All-Star in 2023. Marte, 31, was an All-Star for the second time in his career last season and could be a huge piece for the Red Sox offense.

“Imagine a Red Sox lineup with Ketel Marte sandwiched in between Jarren Duran and Rafael Devers with Triston Casas batting cleanup. That addition alone would likely be enough to propel the Red Sox into the postseason,” wrote Mountz. “In a 2024 season where an ankle sprain derailed him for a chunk of August and September, Marte still slashed .292/.372/.560 with a career-high 36 home runs, finishing third in NL MVP voting and collecting his first Silver Slugger. Even better, the switch-hitting 31-year-old is signed through 2027 with a club option for 2028, and brings a ton of defensive versatility with the ability to play either middle-infield spot and pretty much anywhere in the outfield.”

Gallen finished third in Cy Young Award voting in 2023 but took a step back in 2024. He had the second-highest ERA of his career in 28 starts. The Diamondbacks may want to trade him before he has the chance to show if he will continue to decline. He will be a free agent after the 2025 season and could be out the door anyway as he is represented by Scott Boras. He will likely take the biggest offer he has, and that will not be the Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks would be getting the No. 7 and No. 25 overall prospects, according to MLB Pipeline, along with Abreu. Abreu hit 15 home runs and won a Gold Glove in his first full season in the big leagues.
