Trump belittles Trudeau and Canada; Musk joins Mar-a-Lago meeting with Orbán: Live

Donald Trump says ‘world is going a little bit crazy’ ahead of Notre Dame Cathedral reopening in Paris

Donald Trump mocked Justin Trudeau in a late-night post on Truth Social, referring to the Canadian prime minister as a “governor” and the country as a “state”.

This follows reporting from their dinner together that the president-elect joked Canada could avoid his suggested tariffs by becoming the 51st state.

On Monday, Trudeau said Americans “are beginning to wake up to the reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive”.

The president-elect has also met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán who visited him at Mar-a-Lago on Monday. They were joined by incoming national security adviser Mike Waltz and Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, set to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Trump has meanwhile backed a candidate to succeed his daughter-in-law Lara Trump as co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC) and named Harmeet Dhillon to lead the civil rights division of the Justice Department and Mark Paoletta as general counsel of the Office of Management & Budget.

He also has caused fresh disquiet after suggesting in an interview with NBC that members of the January 6 committee “should go to jail” for investigating the attempted insurrection at the US Capitol by his supporters.

Giuliani could face ‘imprisonment’ after attacking election workers again

Rudy Giuliani could face hefty fines “as well as imprisonment” if he is held in contempt for repeatedly falsely accusing a pair of election workers of manipulating election results in 2020, a federal judge cautioned Donald Trump’s former attorney on Monday.

A mother-daughter pair of election workers last month accused the former New York City mayor of violating a court order that blocks him from repeating anything that resembles his defamatory remarks about them.

Trump belittles Trudeau as ‘governor’ and Canada as ‘state’

In a late-night post on Truth Social, Donald Trump appeared to belittle Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada as a governor and the country as a state.

A week ago, the president-elect joked that Canada could avoid tariffs he plans to impost by becoming the 51st US state, according to a report.

On Monday, Trudeau said Americans “are beginning to wake up to the reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive”.

Speaking at an event put on by the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, the prime minister also said dealing with Donald Trump on trade will be “a little more challenging” than the last time.

Trudeau said that’s because Trump’s team is coming in with a much clearer set of ideas of what they want to do right away than after his first election win in 2016.

The Republican president-elect has threatened to impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico unless they stem the flow of migrants and drugs.

Watch: Gabbard says she stands ‘in full support’ and ‘wholeheartedly’ agrees with Trump on developments in Syria

Tulsi Gabbard, Donald Trump’s nominee for director of national intelligence, has said she is “in full support” of the president-elect’s position on developments in Syria.

As a reminder, here’s what Trump had to say on Truth Social on Sunday morning:

Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, Russia, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, was not interested in protecting him any longer. There was no reason for Russia to be there in the first place. They lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine, where close to 600,000 Russian soldiers lay wounded or dead, in a war that should never have started, and could go on forever. Russia and Iran are in a weakened state right now, one because of Ukraine and a bad economy, the other because of Israel and its fighting success. Likewise, Zelenskyy and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness. They have ridiculously lost 400,000 soldiers, and many more civilians. There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin. Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse. I know Vladimir well. This is his time to act. China can help. The World is waiting!

The veteran and former Democrat is often criticized over a 2017 visit to Syria in which she met now-ousted Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. Following the visit, Gabbard denied crimes were committed by the Syrian regime and said Assad “is not the enemy of the United States”.

In late November, Nikki Haley launched a scathing attack on Gabbard calling her “a Russian, Iranian, Syrian, Chinese sympathizer”.
