As the US inches closer to the November 5 presidential election, a Reuters US election poll predicted that Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris held a marginal 3 percentage-point lead over Republican Donald Trump—45 % to 42%.
The latest polls survey done by the news agency closed on Sunday indicated that voters particularly Democrats – might be more enthused about this year’s election than they were ahead of the November 2020 presidential election when Democrat Joe Biden defeated Trump.
The race is tight, with a razor-thin margin. According to the latest opinion poll by Washington Post/Schar School, Harris was leading among likely voters in Georgia 51 per cent to 47 per cent, while Trump was slightly ahead in Arizona with 49 per cent to 46 per cent. Both findings fell within the plus or minus 4.5 percentage points margin of error.
On Tuesday (October 22) in the US, Harris will sit down for an interview with NBC News. Her running mate Tim Walz Her is set to be in Madison, Wisconsin with former President Barack Obama and a rally in Racine. The swing state is marking its first day of early voting on October 22.
Trump, on the other hand, has campaigns scheduled in Florida and North Carolina. His running mate JD Vance is set to be in Arizona with events set for Peoria and Tucson.
Across the US’ borders, many in Canada and Mexico are watching the elections with frayed nerves, according to BBC. The concerns here are over impact of the election outcome on trade and security.
Donald Trump’s potential return could mean higher tariffs, affecting trade with both nations. Kamala Harris, on the other hand, is expected to continue open trade policies. The future of agreements like the USMCA is in focus, with tensions on issues like migration, security, and Chinese investment in Mexico also shaping the outlook for North America’s key trading relationships.
In the globalised world, though, the interest in 2024 presidential elections is not just limited to immediate neighbours of the US. Russia appears to be an active ‘hidden hand’ player.
On Tuesday, a US intelligence official confirmed that Russian groups had created and helped spread viral disinformation targeting Walz. This is in line with Russian attempts to derail the Harris-Walz campaign.
