South Africa and Afghanistan will lock horns in the first semifinal of the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup 2024 at Brian Lara Stadium, Trinidad on Wednesday.

South Africa have come through the two group stages with a perfect record of seven wins from seven, having beaten the United States, England and the West Indies to top Group 2 of the Super 8 stage. That said, they have arguably not been at their absolute best despite their flawless record.

The Proteas have been run close on more than one occasion in this competition, beating Bangladesh by four runs in the first phase, while almost suffering a shock defeat to Nepal — who came within a single run of serving what would have been the upset of the tournament.

In the Super 8 phase, they got by the United States by 18 runs in their first match before squeezing out a slender seven-run victory against England. They chased a revised DLS target of 123 runs with just five balls remaining in their Super 8 finale against the Windies.

Afghanistan, meanwhile, are having a dream run in this World Cup. They finished second in Group 1 of the Super 8 stage and are now set to make their first-ever appearance in a T20 World Cup semifinal.  The Afghans’ sensational run includes shock, but heavy, wins over cricketing giants New Zealand and Australia.

Rashid Khan and Co. needed to beat Bangladesh in their final Super 8 clash in order to qualify for the semis after India beat Australia earlier in the day. And they did exactly that but in heart-in-mouth fashion.

Afghanistan, led by four-fors from Naveen Ul-Haq and Rashid Khan, edged out Bangladesh by a mere eight runs, and in the process, also dumped Australia out of the tournament.

With the cricketing extravaganza continuing at the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, The Sporting News has all the details on how to watch the action.
