You No Longer Need to Travel to Italy or France for This Bucket-List Experience

This coveted experience is no longer only found in Europe.

Walking through the woods alongside adorable truffle-hunting dogs as they sniff for underground culinary treasures is no longer an experience reserved for Italy or France. Yes, you can now go truffle hunting in the United States, perhaps even in the woods near you.

There are a few native truffle species in North America including black truffles in the Pacific Northwest, pecan truffles in the southern part of the country, and Appalachian truffles in—where else—the Appalachian mountains. Not to mention there’s been a growth of truffle orchards around the country that have planted oak and hazelnut trees inoculated with European truffles.

Some of these destinations and orchards also offer truffle hunting excursions and some even have truffle dog training workshops, so you too can one day hunt for truffles with your pup on your own.
